This is a transitional version of the Style 3 mahogany ukulele Martin made in the mid-1950s. Its lovely 7-ply edge, 9-ply rosette, and 3-ply back binding are all in wonderful shape. The finish, which has darkened to a lovely gold, has some light checking. This 3M features dot-style fret markers and the slightly longer headstock with a Martin decal. It precedes the "Made In U.S.A." internal stamp that was introduced in the late 50s.

Martin had increased its nut width to 1 7/8 around this time, making modern playing styles much easier.

Overall length: 21 in. (53.3 cm.)
Width: 6 3/8 in. (16.2 cm.)
Depth: 2 1/4 in. (5.7 cm.)
Scale length: 13 1/2 in. (343 mm.)
Nut Width: 1 7/8 in. (48 mm.)

This is a well preserved example of the rare top of the line (for its time) mahogany 3M ukulele. While not entirely free of evidence of playtime, it is clean overall. After having a precision setup done, it plays great! It has some light finish checking and normal signs of use, including some dings on the lower bout and headstock. It has a hard to see, tight, and professionally sealed hairline along its bass side. These transitional models were not manufactured often by this point in Martin's distinguished history and rarely come up for sale.
