This L-4 dates to the early 1930's, a transitional time for the model as it evolved from its original 1910's oval hole format to the "modern" F-hole form it would eventually take. This version is a round hole 16" 14 fret archtop with a carved top and back, single bound, with a bound dot-inlaid fingerboard and pearl Gibson headstock logo and diamond inlay on the headstock.
The round hole archtop is typically seen as a hybrid instrument, with the punch and projection of an archtop and the more open tone of flattop guitars. This is a very good sounding and playing L-4 It lives up to that description.

This guitar has had extensive work done to it to restore it from having a pickup and electronics installed prior to its arrival here. Work included a top and rosette repair at the fingerboard tongue. A hole in the top for a pot was filled and masked. A hole in the treble side lower bout was also patched and masked. The top has had some cracks soundly cleated. The back was refinished, and top and bottom cracks were sealed. Raw wood on the neck has been stained to match. The original bridge top may have been thinned, but it does have room to be adjusted up or down. The tuners are appropriate replacements. Even with all this work, the guitar presents quite nicely with great action, sounds great. It’s a working trad jazz, country blues, or early folk musician's gig worthy archtop that's ready to be played.
It comes with non original Gretsch case.
